As most of you know, I (used to) bartend 3 nights a week. Well, that is no more. I found out through others that worked at Red Robin that myself and another bartender had been moved back to be servers. The other bartender found out that he and I were being pulled over a week ago. However I didn't find out till this past Monday when I called him to see if we could switch shifts. At that point I went in to talk to my manager to find out what was going on. She told me she didn't know and to ask the GM. At that point I was pissed. WTF?!?!?! So for 2 days I tried to get a hold of my GM. He would never return my calls, or he would keep me on hold for 15 minutes. Finally yesterday, I said screw it. I applied at NYPD Pizza to be a server (Hired on the spot).Figured at this point me quitting The Dirty Bird (Red Robin) was for the principal. I'm sorry, but in my mind I should have been the first to know, and should have been told by the GM. So after turning in my application at NYPD Pizza, I spoke with the manager and he hired me on the spot. I start next week. As I'm getting back to my car, my phone rings. Behold, its my GM from Red Robin. My shift started in 30 minutes. I answer the phone, and he plays it al cool and casual.
Greg: Hello?
GM: Greg, Hey Bro, it Jason from work.
Greg: Hey Jason, how are you?
GM: Good Bro, what you up to?
Greg: Actually, I am on my way in to talk to you.
GM: Oh, really? Cool, when do you think you will be in?
Greg: I should be there within the hour, but be aware, I am not working. I am stopping at home real quick to grab my shirts to bring them to you.
GM: Oh, um OK.
Greg: I will explain my reasons to you when I get there.
GM: OK, well, I will see you when you get here.
So I leave NYPD Pizza, head to my house and grab my shirts. As I walk into Red Robin, he is standing there waiting for me. We head to a table and start to talk.
GM: Whats going on Bro?
Greg: Ummmmmm.... You tell me?
GM: I'm guessing you heard whats going on with the bar schedule?
Greg: Yeah, apperently the entire staff but me knew I was being pulled out of the bar.
GM: Yeah, I'm really sorry about how this went down. I totally dropped the ball on this one.
Greg: The problem I have is that the entire store knew before I did.
GM: Yeah, I understand there has to be some embarrassment in that.
Greg: I'm not embarrassed, if any one should be, its you and your management staff. For not handling this situation the way it should have been handled. At this point I don't even care what the reason is for it.
GM: Your right, it should have been delt with last week, and I should have not procrastinated. This is the tough part of my job, when I like and respect some one on a personal level. I don't want you to think of it as a being demoted.
Greg: No, its more like a slap in the face.
GM: I value you as a person and as an employee
Greg: How can you sit here and tell me that, when you couldn't even tell me yourself? I worked with you 3 times last week. This situation was handled very poorly. I can not be happy here knowing how this went down, and wondering if its going to happen again, to me or even someone else.
GM: Your right, I promise though, that I will handle things better in the future. Is there anyway I can convince you to stay? Why don't we just take you off the schedule and mark you down as on vacation for the next few weeks. You can take as much time as you need.
Greg: I'm not going to promise that I will be back. And I will be looking for another part time job during that time.
GM: I can respect that
Greg: And I would hope that if I put you down as a referrence on an application you will give me a good recomendation.
GM: Of course, but I hope it doesn't come to that.
Really? After how this happened, he expects me to just jump back on board and be happy? I wanted to tell him to get on his knees and beg. He pretty much did beg though. It was actually kinda funny. I just have to much pride in myself and my work to stay employed somewhere where something like this happens. I have never owned a business, but I can't see that this is how a business should be ran.
