I want to add three gages to my SRT8 Charger...digital combo tach/shift light, digital oil pressure, and digital speedometer....I have the gages in hand. Went to LHM in Bountiful to have them installed. Problem #1...I want them in a pillar pod....no can do as I have side curtain air bags, and the warning on the pod says don't use it with air bags. Problem #2, the tech and service manager (JOE) say they don't think they can get the speedo to work without throwing codes, too many computers involved in the system and they don't want to install the gauge. I have the factory display in the charger set to large digital, but I want some external gages.
I posted this awhile ago and I still don't have them installed. I have decided to put them on the piller dispite the warning. Anyone have a clue on how to hook them up? Gary L.

Wow, I would really be hesitant about hooking anything over an airbag. I wouldn't want to pick the gages out of my forehead and teeth in a fender bender. I have no clue on how you could do this and would think it would throw codes no matter where you put it. Good luck! I want to see it when your done (as long as the car is in park! LOL)

You might just have to get rid of the airbag there and just replace it with your gauges. If you really want your gauges, then you don't want your airbag.

Ok ease up a bit here...the gages go on the A piller, and there are no air bags in there. The air bags they are talking about are the side air bags, and there is a SMALL chance that if the side air bags deploy they MIGHT knock the A piller around some. The steering wheel air bag isn't an issue. If my side air bags deploy, I think I have bigger problems then the SMALL chance the gages might come loose.
Anyhoo thats where I want them..... You know manufacturer puts the warning on there just to cover his butt.
Happy birthday Gordon, sorry I missed your party........ Gary L.

I bet it can be done! I dont see any reason why you woldnt be able to install A Pillar gauges without any sidebag issues. Well Gary not if but when you do get em install, it is certainly going to be bad azz. I will check around as well, but would suggest getting another opinion. Pretty confident you can make this happen. I seen it done on other LX's online before.

Oh, I see! My bad. I wasn't ripping on you or anything. I really thought the air bags were mounted in the A-pillars. That's all what my comment meant. It's really hard to type and show how one is saying the sentence. I didn't know we could have the side airbag option, so I didn't know that's where they were. Well, if you do do the A-pillars. It wouldn't pop them off thaaaat much would they? Personally, I think you should do the gauges on the A-pillars even if you have the airbags there.

Ditto on what Ben said. I was thinking the side curtains were behind the A-pillar.

Yeah I didn't explain it very well the first time. Might anyone have a wiring schematic or diagram I could look at to see which wires are what? That would save a lot of time. Gary L.

Happy birthday Gordon, sorry I missed your party........ Gary L. It's ok, we did have a blast however. I've had this same issue. I've always wanted to put a tach on my van for when I'm pulling the travel trailer. First I tried the dealer and got the same response. I then tried several other guys I knew, and again no one wanted to touch it. From what I understand the gauges have to tie into the computer, and that is the problem. It's not like the good old days where you were able to hook them up to the coil. As Chris said, there's got to be someone out there that knows how to do it. I hope you have better luck finding them then I did. I'll keep an eye on this post, because if you do find someone, I might have them put that tach on my van as well.

Jeremy, one of our members have the A Pillar gauges on his Charger. I have seen many different appilcations on various SRT8 threads & forums. There were a few who mention side airbags being an issue, but for the most part most seemed to say it is doable, now we just got to find out how and who would be willing to take on task.

Well I'm happy to report progress is being made, even though this is a learn as you go deal. The pod and gages are mounted on the A piller, and the oil pressure is functional. The combination auto meter tach/shift light has been a real problem, so I called Auto meter and got this response; "vehicles without a tachometer signal need to have an adapter installed. For the installation of the tachometer adapter, it will require locating the power supply to the ignition coils and cutting the power supply prior to the power splitting between all of the coils. The tachometer adapter will have an in (red) and an out (red/green) wire. Wire the adapter between the two cut halves of the power supply. Ground the black wire and the last wire (gray) is your new tachometer output. Oh joy...another 80 bucks but at least it's on the way. The other gauge is a digital speedometer ( actually all are digital ) and I believe we have found the correct output signal wire for that. I will know by the weekend if it all comes together or not. My son-in-law, who is a mech at Kings first stop and go's to all the car shows with his cherry blue 68 camaro SS, is the brains behind the project and is an unbelievably good mechanic. Many thanks to him for all his help. I guess the point is most anything is doable on these cars if you keep after it. We'll know soon. Gary L.
