For those who don't recall, I work at Doug Smith Dodge. Anyway, today I had a co-worker tell me he recently learned that a great idea for the 5.7L Hemi in my '08 Charger R/T was to remove the camshaft and install a stock 6.1L camshaft in its place. He says it is a bolt-in swap that nets 30 HP and "wakes that engine right up." Furthermore, he says the guys at TeraFlex have done this upgrade on a few Wranglers which have received 5.7L Hemi transplants.
I certainly haven't heard of this being done before. Has anyone here heard of it being done--or, better yet, has anyone seen it? If so, I have questions for you. I'm highly curious if it really is a drop-in swap, and I'd like to see before and after dyno plots so as to see how the shape of the torque curve is altered with the larger bumpstick.
Can anyone provide some info? Thanks in advance.

Never heard of this. How much do you get the 6.1 cam for? Cheap. Really cheap. I know I get employee pricing on parts, and I have no idea how much markup the camshaft has, but I was shocked at how low the price is. This is why there are two of us (myself and another salesman who also owns a Charger R/T) who are researching the validity of these claims--if they are true, the cost:benefit ratio of this mod would be unreal.

My suggestion, if you haven't done it already, is to put the predator tuner on. That makes a world of a difference. Next would be the exhaust and cold air intake! With just those mods you will be able to keep up with a bone stock SRT (right Richard! ).

My suggestion, if you haven't done it already, is to put the predator tuner on. Everybody says this is a great mod, and I'm sure they're happy with their results, but I'm not so certain it's the right thing for me. I guess I still need to learn more about it.

So have ya heard anything yet? I know the Intake Manifold is an easy interchangable. Heard that the R/T headers are pretty restrictive. Keep us posted on your discovery.

So have ya heard anything yet? I have. It took me a few attempts to get someone live to answer the phone, but I finally did speak with Karl. He says he has done the 6.1L cam into a 5.7L engine a few times. I asked if it was a direct bolt-in swap and he said it is, though they strongly recommend (read: essentially require) upgrading the valve springs. He told me they like to install beehive springs (about which I've read fantastic things in Car Craft magazine tests). Karl didn't quantify any specific power gains that would result from this swap, however, so I'm still in the dark there. So at least we know it has been done, and been done locally to boot.

Good news! Let us know if you are gonna go through with it. I am interested to see the difference in power gains.
