So Richard, what did yuo decide? I like my tint tail lights alot and it gives it a nice clean touch, but I worry about officer friendly saying its my fault if I get rear ended. I saw a rear end accident this morning on the way to work and it made me cringe, that it could have been me and the arriving officer would fault me.
I know thats probably not how it would go down, but I have my reasons for thinking the worst. I will have to tell you bout the time, someone ran a red light and hit me so hard, it spun me around and made it look like I hit him, and sure enough the very nice officer said, the other guy might not be at fault, even though he admitted it. yeah, I have that kinda of luck. Sorry to get off topic, just giving you my thoughts on it.

If you research your DOT regulations, you'll find most likely that as long as you keep the reflectivity factor and the reverse lights clear you won't be in any violation. Most states forgive you if at least your reverse lights are still clear because they are reflective... But, I know UDOT has hellish regulations against tinting just about anything these days. Sucks for those of us who mod any and everything on the exterior of our cars.
But, all that said, there are some very "friendly" officers in Utah so if I were you I'd just move to Wyoming, pull your catalytic converters, all your emissions equipment, black out your windows and your tails, and just have a hell of a time!
I'm just kidding... Utah rocks, don't move. Besides, it's way to windy here in WYO and you get stuck cleaning dust off the dash and out of deep dish wheels about every other day, it blows... literally.
Show us what you do whenever you do it, mods are awesome!

I've already painted the top and sides of the tails, so I'm going to have to mask like crazy when I do, just don't know when.

Carefull, Utah Lighting Laws changed January 1st 2011. This is what I found out after I got a ticket for my tinted tails and tinted side marker lights.
TAIL LAMP ASSEMBLY 1. Check tail lamp assembly for proper lens and required reflex reflectors. a. REJECT when: 1) Rear lens does not produce red light, painted or are covered by any cover. 2) Lens is missing required reflectors. 3) Tinting or material that obstructs the original design of the light. *NOTE: NHTSA interpretation states aftermarket taillight covers create a non-compliance issue (FMVSS 108 S5.1.3). Utah law states that lighting devices may not be used if they “tend to change the original design or performance” of the original device (UCA 41-6a-1618).
