Could be that your LED is actually starting to fail. Although in an 09 model, that's a little rare... I've heard it happen in older cars, say around ten years or so old. I can't tell what my temperature is in or outside of my Buick, but the controls otherwise work fine.
I'm not sure if the LED's play a role in a circuit which allows one to kill all or or if there is a small capacitor or other diode or thingy that will shut down the light. I just lost the LED backlight in one of my seat heater buttons...
I'm not seeing much on the National Forum either, may not be common at all and just a fluke. I'm with Ben, time for a new stereo. By the time you likely pay to replace a small component, or get one and do it yourself, the headache is worth more than the cost. I replaced the joystick in my navigation unit. It saved me money, no need to replace a head unit like that when the part was all of $45... a new nav unit would have been more than 10 times that so it was justifiable.
