I'm not using 93 octane, just the tune. Last year I was running the 91 octane tune and was running rich. My understanding the difference between the tunes is timing.

I heard that 91 octane here because of the altitude is like running 93 octane so its okay to use the 93 tune?

I heard that 91 octane here because of the altitude is like running 93 octane so its okay to use the 93 tune? That's one way to look at it, octane is basically the fuels resistance to ignition under pressure so at higher altitudes with thinner air (not as dense as at sea level) there is less pressure in the cylinder at top dead center at ignition. So in a nutshell taking the same exact vehicle to a higher elevation in affect is lowering the engines compression ratio so yes we only need 91 here to accomplish the same goal as 93 would be with denser air at sea level! As far as the tune goes I'm not exactly sure as most cars now days with computer controlled timing and the use of knock sensors advances or retards timing to allow for different fuel octane. Allowing higher compression engines to perform as intended with higher octane fuels but still able to run on lower octane without problems. Higher octane doesn't "make more power" it just allows it! So as far as the tune telling the computer your running 93 but actually running 91 I have no idea, guess its all down to what the tune is telling the computer and what the computer will allow so my guess is it probably isn't hurting anything but who knows if it's hindering or helping performance? Guess only the tuners can answer that cause im only a grease monkey! Sent from my Galaxy Note II using ProBoards App
