Hey guys,
As most of you know I moved up here from out of state awhile back. Just got off the phone with my wife who was getting a quote to get my car registered in Utah. Is it correct I have to pay sales tax on my vehicle here? The quote she got over the phone was almost $5K ... unbelievable.
If anyone has any information on this please respond. Is there any loopholes?
Thanks, Casey

when i moved here i did NOT have to repay any kind of sales tax. there is a registration fee and you need to get an inspection and fill out a VIN form. heres a web page for utah: dmv.utah.gov/more-faq#registrationsand it says this: I just moved to Utah. How do I get a Utah registration and how long do I have? New residents to Utah are allowed 60 days to transfer titles and registrations. To do this, you will need the existing title (unless held by a lien holder as collateral in a financing agreement) and the most recent registration. Click here to see if your vehicle needs a safety and/or emissions inspection. All vehicles that are titled or registered in Utah for the first time are required to complete a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspection. Form TC-661, "Certificate of Inspection" must be completed by a DMV employee, designated contractor, peace officer, licensed dealer, or a certified safety inspector. Note that this may be completed by a DMV employee at the time of registration. maybe they thought you were buying a new car... i think it cost me like $150 for the inspection and fee.

reading your post again... did you come from a state that does not charge sales tax when you bought your car new? i think if thats the case, then you may need to pay the sales tax to utah. i came from colorado and sales tax had already been paid to colorado on the car, so utah didn't require me to pay it again.

I paid sales tax in Texas, so maybe they misunderstood or my wife wasn't clear. That makes me feel better about it though!

Even if you didn't pay sales tax anywhere else, I don't see how the state of Utah could make you pay it here. You didn't buy it here.
