Stephen, that sucks man, sorry to hear bout that. I guess they are cracking down on tinted tail lights. Geoff, Ben and now you. Yet I think all you guys were pulled over by UHP, not Sheriff or City. I will keep my butt off the Freeway as much as possible, but than again, my tail lights arent as dark. Im with you on that Chris The only way im getting on the freeway is if im leaving the state

I would cite you under either one of these two statutes. www.le.utah.gov/UtahCode/getCodeSection?code=41-6a-1618or www.le.utah.gov/UtahCode/getCodeSection?code=41-6a-16011601 is pretty much a catch all for "faulty equipment". I use it all the time. The whole reason behind this law? Liability. If I ran into you and could show it was because I didn't see your taillights because they were too dark, the lawsuits would be flying. Same with headlights. If I was a pedestrian and got hit and it came out in discovery you had tinted headlights (even if it wasn't the direct cause of the collision), I'd own your car, your 401K, your savings, and probably your house.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. Even though this would probably never happen, I could remove your covers from your vehicle's lights and keep them in evidence if I did wind up writing a ticket. You'd have to be a total a$$ to go that far.
Let's talk about tinted plate covers for a sec also... Those things drive me nuts. What if your car was stolen, and entered into NCIC. And a cop was behind you but couldn't run the plate because you had a tinted plate cover on it and he didn't want to bother with pulling you over (and couldn't run the plate) because people think it's a chicken shiiit traffic stop. That would suck bad for you, might have had a chance to recover your car before it got wrecked or chopped and caught the prick that messed with your ride.
Sorry, I just see things with a different view than most others...
And what *seems* like piddly reasons for a stop might seem lame for some, you'd be amazed at the level of criminal activity that can be discovered from those stops.
If you guys want to pick my brain with questions like this, ask away. I'll be glad to help you understand why we do what we do...

Oh, I can only imagine. I have gone on a ride along and got a taste of law enforcement officer's thinking. I got messed with way too many times as a teenage for Headlight covers, and taillight covers, and that is why I don't do anything to my car that will give a reason for a police officer to pull me over. Now my driving style is another story. I will pick your brain on CCW laws in the future.

Thanks for the advice. I got flagged down a few weeks back for a "seatbelt check" but cars in front of me werent pulled over and im guessing my halos caught his attention. He told me about the seatbelt and that i was good. Then he said im not sure about the headlights but i will let a UHP deal with that. So im assuming that im in the clear in the city i live in?
I got pulled over by UHP a week ago for my fog lights because they are white LEDs but i tinted them so they looked blue. Didnt really noticed until he pointed them out and this was all at night. He walked up to the front to check it out and not sure if it was because it was dark but he didnt say anything about tinted headlights/fogs. My tailights are tinted also but not really dark. Was he just a nice officer or is everything fine? They are tinted but you can still see the stuff inside just fine. What im asking is should i worry about tinted headlights? Someone told me that any kind of tint is illegal but i wanted to know from someone who actually does know. Thanks

Your lights must not be dark enough that "persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of 1,000 feet ahead." Also, I would argue against you in court that under www.le.utah.gov/UtahCode/getCodeSection?code=41-6a-1618 your tinting is/are "parts of that equipment (headlights) which tend to change the original design or performance". I would further argue that any change in the output of the light from a factory spec would inherintly change the performance of that peice of equipment. Sorry. Not sure if thats what you want to hear!

It's sure nice having an officer to clarify things like this! I'm sure we are going to be many more questions in the near future!

I'm telling you guys, You shouldn't have gone black. Keep em red like mine, they don't seem to notice as much. I got pulled over on Saturday. The officer didn't say anything about my tails, or my Halo's. Just that I needed to move right to allow for the emergency vehicle going the other direction room to pass. My argument was I was in the left lane heading south on Redwood, the cop was in the right lane heading south on Redwood. If I had of moved over, I would have side swipped the cop. He let me go when he realized I couldn't have moved right without running into him.
